Success and Failures of idents

Success and Failures of idents

Idents are small adverts that are trying to market the channel. Each ident has opportunities and limitations. The opportunities are mostly advantages and allow you to brand your channel and create a corporate identity and tone for your channel. Most idents would normally have text-based information about the channel and/ or the programs there would be shown. Most of them try to appeal to a target audience, which would encourage brand loyalty. However with the opportunity there would be some limitations to their idents. These would include things like the typography – where you have to think about the font size and they way that the things are written. The aspect ration is also a limitation because you would have to think if the things shown would be on a big screen or a small one. This can also relate to the resolution because that would also depend on the device that is showing an iPod or a laptop. One other main limitation would be the colours that are shown – you would have to make sure it would be shown clearly on any device.
To be able to make a successful ident it has to interact with the viewers, the balance of the composition is done to a good standard; it has visual and sound information. The ident has to be directly appealing to the target audience e.g the music, images and language and most of all it is visually entertaining and interesting.

By having these limitations and opportunity it means that there would be some successful and unsuccessful idents. One of the first examples of an ident I would be talking about would be UKTV GOLD’S ident from 1992 and 2004. The ident from 2004 is more efficient than 1993 because of the aspects and settings that are used to make it. The 2004 ident is more interesting and more colourful than the old one. Its tempo is thought of well because it matches the speed of the animation and animations that are shown. It is trying to show that it’s a funny channel and that you can lie down and relax whilst watching it. They do this by trying to appeal to the target audience and the everyday person. They accomplish this by having real life objects and have a line that moves that connects everything together to make it seem like everything is linked and one making it seem like if you need or want anything they may have it. The use of their music and the “brand” of the channel are also showing that they are better than any channel and more important than what you have to do. Having their ident as a animation and not having it in the real world is trying to show that they are taking you somewhere else that is far away that you would want to be at.
However with the success of this ident there was an unsuccessful ident- this ident was the 2004 ident. I found this ident really boring and dull because there wasn’t enough use colour and the colours used were very dull and unappealing. The ident was also very pixelated and not very clear in the message that they were trying to show. Their target audience was unclear as well because their message was unclear in what they were trying to perceive. The ident also doesn’t have any information as to the programs that are going to be shown next which could be useful to the users so they are able to know the next program that are going to be shown.  The music to the ident is very boring and appealing to any generation because its quiet slow and doesn’t get upbeat in anyway. The setting of the ident is quiet boring even though they are trying to make it realistic and more in common to the modern person. I also noticed that in the ident the music was not to a very high standard and was kind of jumping and was not made to the best standard- this can make the audience unable to watch because of the poor quality of the ident.

Another ident that I analysed was the Dave ident that was made in 2013 and another one that was made in 2009. I also examined how it carries itself as a channel. The success of Dave channel may be because they did the correct research in order to get and to know what their target audience would like and would be interested in. This would include things like making the theme of ident imaginative and creative of having it on a boat- which makes it seem like it can take you to another place in the room that you are in. The use of the teenagers makes it seem like it’s trying to target at the younger audience and trying to interact with them. Having the circus music makes it fun and entertaining to watch and to dance to. The teenagers dresses up in a costume on a sunny day- and the fact that they are dressed like pirates makes it relaxing and making them dress up suggest that it’s fun and imaginative.
On the other hand when there are successes to ident there would be unsuccessful ones too. The Dave ident that was made in 2013 seems boring and uninteresting to watch – considering that fact that it was made recently and would be able to appeal to the audience. It also has no message or information about the upcoming program or anything to do with the channel. The ident also exhibits random things in it – however the alarm is also to show the everyday person.  The use of saying ‘ the breakfast club ‘ then having the alarm is almost trying to say they should stop what they are doing to watch the channel.

Draft 1 Ident Report

Idents are the things that show the identity of the channel and what it’s all about and the programs that it shows. It shows how they portray themselves to their audience. It also shows who they are as a channel and what they represent. The use of an ident is mainly to show the public their identity and what kinds of things that they show and to make sure that no one steals it so its copy righted.
My first ident I will be talking about is
ITV: 2013 Idents (4): Hula Hoops Idents (v1)
Tempo
The tempo that is used in the ident is quiet slow and calm this is because it has been shown at night so they wouldn’t want any kind if up-pace or loud music to be playing in case some people are sleeping. They also made is a slow pace music because of the program that is coming later, which would me a slow pace and calming program.  This can also portray that they want to show that people should take their time and relax and watch that channel. The ident is of a girl in the dark with a light up hula hoop which shows how fun they are as a channel and the programs that they show.  The ident of the channel stays consist and doesn’t either speed up or slow down, by doing this they are keeping their viewers consistently on the channel.
Space and time
The space and time for this advert is at a festival, which can relate to the every-day person because the average person go to festivals and have fun. By doing this they are trying to show that their channel is for all ages and they can relate to the idents and to the programs that are shown, and that it isn’t just for one age group.  ITV is a family channel that has many different genres of programs they show to all audience, from comedy, to talent to drama programs. This shows the channels identity that they can show any kind of program to anyone.
Density of info
In the ident the information told to us is about who is addressing us and the programs that are about to go on. At the start of the ident the logo for ITV is displayed within 2seconds of the ident as the women is speaking- however it only starts letter by letter before fully showing the logo at 6 seconds. Throughout the remaining seconds of the ident the logo of ITV is left on t display in the screen to show the viewers what channel they are watching if they have just changed to that channel.  In the ident there is only a space of about 1 seconds before we hear the TV personal Davina Mccall addressing who is speaking and telling us about the programs that are about to be shown- this is all unit the end of the ident. Even though the main point of the ident is to show how fun it is with the luminous hula hoop, it also does have a bit of information about the channel.

Composition
The composition of the ident is to mainly show the girl with the hula hoop smiling and having fun as she is doing it- as she is using the hula hoop the logo of ITV is as the side and not in the centre because then you wouldn’t be able to see the girl smiling when she is using the hula hoop. The use of the light in the hula hoops shows that it is a vibrant channel. Whilst the girl is hula hooping it has a close up of her smiling meaning that she is enjoying herself as she does it, this can show that they channel is fun and exciting to watch. I think that they composition of the channel is to keep the audience watching their programs and the channel, and to keep them watching through the ident finding it fun and thrilling to watch.

Interaction with Viewers
The voice of Davina Mccall is quiet informal but not too much or else they would lose the older audience because they wouldn’t be able to know what she is talking about. At the beginning of the ident Davina addresses the audience in a quiet informal way, but it wasn’t too informal but she did have a formal tone as she said it. Going to the ident a bit more she starts to speak as if she is trying to relate to all the audience is a jokey fun kind of way – showing that the channel is trying to relate to all audiences so that they can get more viewers. By having this kind of language towards the audience is implies that ITV is trying to know what is new and trying to connect with their target audiences.

Information or Entertainment
The ident is mostly for entertainment purposes but it also does contain information that may be useful to the viewers. The ident is also for the entertainment of the audience by having the girl at a festival and with a hula hoop with lights in them is meant to make the younger generation relate to it as being fun, and the older generation to feel how cute and fun that it is. Their purpose it to try and entertain the audience with their ident by making it as fun and yet informational as they can

My second ident I choose to do was
CITV: Current Idents (1) Rocket Ident
Information or Entertainment
The ident is for entertainment purposes because it doesn’t have information about the programs about to be shown or what the channel is about it- the channel itself is both educational and entertainment purposes. On the other hand in the morning the programs that are shown are educational for the people who didn’t go to school so that they don’t miss anything. They normally teach the younger one how to do maths, English and at times science. Except for when it is afternoon, then they start to show things like cartoons or adventure shows or play games.
Interaction with Viewers
The interaction with the viewers is to make the younger audience entranced in what they are watching and make them want to watch more. Due to the fact that it is a kids channel they don’t really say anything because the audience might not be able to understand what they are saying or that it will draw away the attention of the animation in the ident. By having the indent futuristic is makes the audience feel like they are somewhere else and feel like they can have fun and image that they are somewhere else than a living room.
Composition
The composition of the ident is to show that the channel is interesting and takes you “out of this world” – the bottom of the rocket is part of the C in CITV and gets disconnected to join onto the ITV in a robotic way to intrigue the audience to keep watching. By having the rocket is the ident it relate to the target audience of 9+ because they would like to image and or play with things like that and by having a rocket it makes it feel like they can play along with the ident and be able to image that they are on the rocket as well because of how its zoomed in. I think that they composition of the channel is to keep the audience watching not only the ident but also their programs.
Tempo
The tempo of the ident is slow however not too slow but it’s almost like a medium speed. If they did make the ident slow and calm it may make their target audience sleep which would b bad for them. They may have wanted to have a medium paced tempo because it’s a rocket so they would have wanted to match the ident because if it was too fast it will scare them or if it was too slow it won’t match them theme or that it will bore them. This is also to show that they know what they do when it comes to their target audience and what kind of things they do or don’t like- it also shows that they know what kind of things they like and what music they may like. The ident for the channel’s tempo doesn’t speed up or slow down but stays consistent.
Space and time
The space and time for this advert is in space with a rocket going up into the corner of the screen. This can relate their target audience because they have an active imagination and would normally play with rockets or other things related to anything that flies. By doing this are specifying that the channel is only for active imagination that can expand anything they would want to and that it is for 7 – 12 year olds

Density of info
The ident doesn’t tell you what programs are about to show because it’s a kids channel but it does tell you what the channel represents. To be able to do it has a cartoon animation of a rocket on its lift off and the C of the CITV is part of the rocket- by doing this they are showing that they are connected and that they are one in the same. At the end of the ident the C gets disconnected and then connects back to the ITV in a robotic way, by doing this it shows that they are coming back to earth meaning that they can be sophisticated and intellectual as well.
CBBC
The identity of CBBC’S ident is for children and teenagers up to 13 or 14. I can easily tell this if for the older audience because the music is upbeat and quick, it also displays many kind of “monster” sort of thing which the younger kids wouldn’t like. The tempo of the music is quite fast and upbeat. This can indicate that the channel is fun and exciting and that anyone it is designed for 10 – 14 year olds. It is also a kind of music that you can dance to, showing that they are trying to relate to their target audience. The composition of the ident is that giving the letters of CBBC different artistic ways they are showing that they are able to connect to the teens and are able to know what kind of things that they want. It also shows that they are able to know what the youth of the day likes and wants. The space and time of the ident is abstract and by making it abstract they want to engage their audience to watch it. However they change their ident sometimes and at times it’s not abstract, but it’s not always something that you would expect to see in everyday life. CBBC is not just a channel to show cartoon and dramas- it is also very educational. In the mornings at about 10 o’clock there are educational shows like maths and English and they teach you the basic things that you would need to know at your age. There isn’t anything said in the ident for it to have any interaction with the audience but the way that the CBBC is said is like a digital way to make them more interacted and interested in the channel and what they are watching.
BBC ONE

The channel that I chose to do the ident for is BBC one. The channel was first made in 1953. They have been changing their idents throughout the years to draw in varies audiences. By doing this they can get many other ages to watch the channel.BBC one's ident shows that they are the centre of the world and that they broadcast everywhere because their ident is a circle. The use of their circle is also so show that they view different shoes to different audience.  It may give the audience a sense that they may be able to know what to watch and when to watch it because their schedule is the same and that they can watch anything because they have varies age group targets. The channel varies from shows depending on the time such as panorama at 10pm due to the fact that it is an adult program.BBC isn't only for adults they also have varies types of BBC shoes like: CBBC - which is a children’s show which shoes cartoon and adventure shows, CBEEBIES - which is for babies to kids and shows colours cartoon programs and BBC two, three and four which are for young adults and adults. The shows vary the things they show to keep the younger ages and older ages occupies, such as comedy, drama and documentaries.
